Spank Components - Sea Otter Day 4

Spank's Spike pedals received quite a bit of attention during our preview article due to their unique looks and ultra thin 12mm profile, but there is more to the story than those two facts. The large platform spins on an oversized inboard sealed bearing and a thin outboard bushing that allows the pedal to have such a slim profile, while the leading and side edges of the body are shaped for more clearance and to glance off of impacts.<br><br><span style='font-size:19px'>Spank Spike pedal details:</span><br><br>- Thin 12mm pedal body<br>- Large 90 sqcm platform<br>- 19 adjustable pins per pedal<br>- Cold forged and CNC optimized body<br>- Chamfered leading and side edges for improved impact deflection and more clearance<br>- Full compliment sealed inboard bearing<br>- Reduced diameter Igus outboard bushing<br>- Heat treated steel pedal axle<br>- Proprietary 'Spank Friction Seal' for durability and maintenance<br>- Reduced Q-factor<br>- Sub 400g weight (<i>claimed</i>) with cromo axle and alloy platform<br>- MSRP $125 USD

- Reduced diameter Igus outboard bushing
- Heat treated steel pedal axle
- Proprietary 'Spank Friction Seal' for durability and maintenance
- Reduced Q-factor
- Sub 400g weight (claimed) with cromo axle and alloy platform

There is a good chance that Spank's Oozy LTD bar has more technology packed into it than any other aluminum bar out there, with the result being a 700mm wide trail/all-mountain bar that weighs in between 208 and 220 grams depending on the rise option. The bar features Spank's Dual Extreme Gradual Taper, as well as a stem clamping area that Spank takes great pains to ensure is perfectly cylindrical - not something you'll see on all of the other bars when you inspect them closely. The bars also sport reinforced ends to keep them from being damaged when the bike hits the ground.<br><br><span style='font-size:19px'>Spank Oozy LTD bar details:</span><br><br>- Rise options: 5/15/30mm<br>- Width: 700mm<br>- Colors: white or black<br>- Weight: 208g to 220g

If you're going to run the trick Oozy LTD bar, you should probably bolt it up to their matching Oozy LTD stem. At just 125-150- grams, the Oozy stem is light enough to brag about it's weight, but it is still rated for trail or all-mountain use. It comes complete with titanium bolts, including Spank's massive high torque single steerer clamp bolt.<br><br><span style='font-size:19px'>Spank Oozy LTD stem details:</span><br><br>- 3D Forged CNC Construction<br>- Length options: 50/60/7080mm<br>- Titanium hardware<br>- Uses Spank's Sex Bolt High Torque Lock-Down steerer clamp bolt<br>- Weight: 125-150 grams

Well it's a steel axle for one, and I would say it's not a Magnesium body but doesn't say anything about that...Most pedals that are sub 400g are Mg bodies and Ti axles.

Why does one pedal say spank and the other two say spike?

Probably says SPANK on one side and SPIKE on the other.

 Two things I don't understand.
1) How everyone seems to be charging that kind of money for some pedals this year.
2) How I seem to be the only one who thinks that more than 60$ is OTT for two bits of forged ally on two bearings and two bushes. The designs all work, and it isn't rocket science.

God, Really? I counted 20 out of 48 comments where people were actually arguing over the difference of 1 overall pin that will be dented over after the first rock garden. At your local hardware store they are about .50 (usd) a piece. :-)
With an ultra-thin 12mm platform, 18 adjustable pins per pedal, an oversized full compliment industrial bearing combined with small diameter IGUS bushing, and a 400g per pair weight...
Thats from the Spank website.

Source: http://www.spank-ind.com/index.php?a=info&do=news&id=44 />

However the picture they show only has one pin on the axle part of the platform. The pics displayed here show 2.
Its safe to assume there are 20 now. ie an extra 1 on each side...

I am going to buy a set, no doubt. Thats a lot of pedal for really not that much money. For the record though, they are 18 pins, not 19.

I count ten each side, which i think makes twenty?
 • + 4
flag brule Mod Plus (Apr 18, 2011 at 0:13)
now you are both close and this has been previously discussed on the main page - the pedals have different counts - 9 on one side and 10 on the other - search the news to learn more.

flag ninjatarian (Apr 18, 2011 at 0:21)
I am only counting from one side, both screw heads and screws coming through the pedals and I have never been able to count 19. I talked to someone who is their and picked it up and physically counted, he said its 18. So idk then if you swear they are 19.

Ya we'll get proper shots of each side in the review itself, but yep 19 in total per pedal.

flag scottyoungsheep (Apr 18, 2011 at 0:27)
I'm looking at the red pedal, counting pins and screws and adding 2 for the pins next to the end of the axle, which i'm pretty sure go straight thru?

Still get 20...

Whatever it is, they are sweet. I'll be getting them when they arrive in Scotland.
 • + 1
flag ninjatarian (Apr 18, 2011 at 0:28)
The ones near the axle in the center go all the way through right, so thats just two pins in the middle of the pedal, not four?
 • + 1
flag scottyoungsheep (Apr 18, 2011 at 0:31)
But there are still 2 pins protruding on each side. I'd count them twice, you might not, that's just semantics.

In terms of what is sticking in your shoes, its ten each side
 • + 1
flag ninjatarian (Apr 18, 2011 at 0:31)
Brule, that would be awesome. I really want to see where this phantom 19th pin is sitting. If I count the pins in the center as 2 (going all the way through) I come up with 18. If I count them as seperate pins on each side, I come up with 20. I just cant seem to come up with 19.

The number of pins really doesnt matter, its just an odd mistery to me.

 question for the day....

How many pinkbike readers does it take to count screws on a pedal and get it right?

Im not sure we have the answer yet.
 • + 17
flag d-wojo (Apr 18, 2011 at 0:57)
i'd be even happy calling it 'roughly 19' give or take.

let me have a go....

1 - 2 - 3 - 4... shit I lost count.

1 - 2 - 3 - 4 - 5 - 6 - 7 - 8 ... sorry now Im thouroughly bored.

my final thought is... does it matter? WHO GIVES A SH!T?

flag andyf7 (Apr 18, 2011 at 1:29)
I can indeed count 19. the pins are symmetrical both sides apart from one, if u look at the red pedal, theres the 3 pins along the top, then one slightly offset from these, just down and a little out from the 3 pins in a row. this pin doesnt appear on the other side, just t clear that up for all you people beating yourselves up!!

Really guys.... really a debate over one pin? I think there are way bigger and cooler facts on this pedal to talk about then the fact that some people count 19 and some count 20. lol its one pin. I will let you guys know how many there are when I get a set.

I saw these at the sea otter in person, I counted the pins...

there are 18 if the two central ones go all the way through, and 20 if they are actually separate pins.

no odd pins...

flag flymore (Apr 18, 2011 at 15:53)
lol.. it doesnt actually settle it, as both sides of the pedal are shown in that link bunkey.. and in that link there is only 1 pin to be found in the centre on both sides of the pedal.. ie 18 pins.. however in this article, it shows 2 in each side (look at the writing, it shows which way up the pedal is) giving a total of 20. maybe the count of 19 is an overall average of how many pins there will be in the pedal? whatever it is i think it is a brilliant practical joke, specially designed for pinkbike to cause a discussion like this...
 • + 1
flag bunkey (Apr 18, 2011 at 20:06)
Flymore, what you seeing is both the left and right pedals on the single pin side which has the same effect as seeing both graphics on the side. If the company photographed the two different sides in the product shoot then it would confuse customers as it would appear that some come with one pin and some with two. Trust me on this one.

Point One had theirs on a lot of demo bikes at interbike...everyone must have liked them...their all spin offs with that offset large bearing. i personally thought they felt too flat, and when you did bottom them on the ground, it seemed like my toes were gonna get broken, theyre so thin, you feel your shoe touch down also...i dunno.

seriously? look again, there is not a single doubt in the fact it is 20 in this photo. both sides of the pedal are shown (checkout the writing to tell which side it is) and each side without a shadow of a doubt has 10 pins in. in another link floating around however there is a set which have 18 pins as it only has one pin in the middle, therefore i think the count of 19 is an overall average to deliberately cause confusion on pinkbike.
