You can make yourself believe whatever you want to ! That bike is just a refined version of an out of date design. I wasn't buying last version and would not buy that one either. Just a refined 1997 SantaCruz Super 8.
You guys do carry some sentimental feelings about Orange i dont blame you. Hell if i was in UK and Orange was a home brand, maybe i would be flaming my own comments about it ! But im not. I am more objective about it. So would i buy an Orange over my 1997 SantaCruz Super8 as an upgrade ? No. All i can say is that it looks old. I dont care if the shock mount is 2 cm away from where it was before. I would love to Get Peat Drunk one night and tell him our conversation was private. Would he say he misses his old Orange ? I doubt.
Xetal - I doubt it does any change for him what bike he rides really. He needed a wealthier sponsor I guess. That was the reason, better financial backup to focus more on training, most probably better training program, more training camps - all the stuff that improves his skill, strength and fitness.
peat is an old school rider he has love for the brands he rides he wouldnt say he misses his orange no way he would say it was a part of me, now im on something different
All i gotta say is your biased ! I dont blame any of you hardcore fans from UK. You back up your brands. But still fail to admit the concept is old and out dated.
I can understand what xetal is saying, when there are so many frame and linkage designs now that offer superior pedalling efficiencies and the rest of it, But the fact of the matter still stands because of the frame construction it is extremely strong and has a very predictable spring curve which makes for an enjoyable, usable bike to ride even if perhaps it doesn't pedal that well. I ride an old orange Patriot LT and with updated components its still an extremely fun bike and I'd buy another If I had the money, out of interest xetal have you ever ridden an orange patriot or 224 etc?
Joezwls, bang on mate! its not about supporting your own brand... though we do (and I don't own an orange) its about FUN. Theres a reason the Five is consistantly voted best trail bike bike in britain, and with a similar design, theres also no reason to scrap a patriot... just update it
I like simple and reliable frame linkage designs, like Oranges' single pivot. Why bother inventing some super unique uber complicated linkages when we can have a simple-as-it-can-be single pivot which works excellent! Yeah it might have a looks of a 10 year old bike, but again, it has it's own style and technology which is in this case good enough for some WC riders.... so why would it be bad for some not WC riders?
Suspension systems and other technologies are about your personal choice. In general you can't say that carbon Nomad is better then this Orange. Some still prefers these simple single pivots and alu frames so what?
Same here. I'd rather have that Patriot than a Carbon Nomad. The people who complain so much about them are the ones who don't know how to ride single pivots.
I'm getting a carbon nomad, but I still love my Orange 5. Super fun lightweight bike. I really enjoy the way single pivots ride. Oh, and I grew up in the States, not UK. No bias here...
Cant say i'm completely convinced by any of the patriots since 05/06, or by Joe Barnes' hair doo come to think of it. The last good patriot was the 2006 patriot66 model, a perfectly balanced, bomb proof piece of Orange craftsmanship, i started riding mine again this year and i'm so glad i didn't get rid of it.
I disagree entirely! Had a 2007/8 Patriot (until some scally twat nicked it) and the thing was a rocket ship. Just point it and let go of the brakes, never seemed to hang up on anything. It's great to see them finally bringing the Patriot back, Alpine 160s are nice but they aren't a proper replacement...
Dude! It looks like the trail builders just hacked into the edge of the hillside. It would be like riding on one of the game trails I hike on when I'm elk hunting in the high mountains, just at lower altitude. Awesome!
Massive props to Orange for how lightweight the bike is.
*Don't know Orange sales figures so this is only speculation* but general public follow trends, they want the latest and greatest, (sometimes) the nicest looking bikes too, it's just the way of any selling market to stay ahead of the game and attract customers is by being innovative. The same looking design may be tried and tested, but there's not a lot about it(to me) that is different to previous models (sure there are probably loads of differences, but on the face it the bike looks the same), ultimately what makes someone buy this bike that didnt consider a Patriot in the first place?

problem with orange is they have no variety. really, look at their bikes! its this same design for every riding style or a hardtail! thats my problem with them. :/

seriously. not trying to take anything away from how good it works, which appears to be 'very' - but it does seem pretty dumb calling a 'new prototype' when you're tweaking on the same design for the last 10 years
i would rather a company keeps tweaking their bikes and building on them instead of starting a whole new design ever 2 years i think it makes better bikes in the end to keep changing things
Exactly. It's evolution. Granted, they're not cheap, but I'm glad Orange haven't succumbed to the 'keep it fresh, keep 'em paying' marketing style of most major bike companies.

What an innovative and fresh design from Orange!!! How can they possibly expect to compete with a company like Santa Cruz that has the sickest new suspension designs and carbon technology! Nice riding and trail here though.

I thought that this vid showed well enough that you can take carbon Nomad and stuff it up yer arse... That guy ripped on that bike twice better than 90% of owners of v10 carbon ever will. Keep it simple Orange, people can't take any advantage of super high tech bikes anyways, thank you for giving us opportunity to buy a simple bike!

My bullit is three years old, it the works well. Adjusting the suspension is dirt simple. Maintaince is simple. The bike is durable and inexpensive. I pass people on high end linkage bikes at whistler. I will probably not outride my bike as I don't race downhill. The cost of replacing my single pivot bike with a linkage design is not worth the little benefit that I would gain from the new bike. My two cents worth
@brodude santa cruz' and intense bikes are useless in uk mud and gloop , once went riding with a friend on his shiny new m3 and spent most of the day picking mud out of the "hightech" rear suspension linkages with a stick ,
Orange have a good following in the UK, but are very overpriced for a simple, single-pivot frame with only a 1 year warranty
I have riding friends who owned Orange bikes and had less than satisfactory experiences with Orange's warranty department during the warranty period, none of these guys are riding Orange anymore
Giant make a short-link virtual pivot bike for less money, with a lifetime warranty....and you will typically find the big brands like Giant and Specialized have very good reputations for backing their customers warranty claims
with Orange, you are not paying the costs of research and development, investments in technology, tooling for tubing and manufacturing setup or proper warranty backup, but for the higher costs of UK manufacturing
I have raced an Orange 224 in the past, it was fair to say that it was not for me. I tried for a year to race the 224 with no real joy. Wakidesigns, I am your mid 30's go-pro goon, unlike wee Joe, I have a mortgage, wife, son, car, real job etc etc. . . Joe has one of the lightest Dh bike on the circuit, it is just that he is dam fast on a shopping trolley too.
hampstead bandit , surely it is better to pay for something that is made literally half an hours drive from my house than something that was made half way across the world and probably brought to this country in a shipping container. im not against frames from thailand or anything they do a proffessional job over there but its like growing carrots in your back garden and then going to asda and buying some that were grown in f*cking mexico they still taste the same but i know which one id rather have
that's a fair comment, but the aluminium alloy (for the sheet metal / tubing and frame components) and the rear shock (plus all the other parts on the complete bike) Orange use are not manufactured in the UK, they all come from offshore sources mainly Taiwan
The patriot isnt anything exciting in terms of design or technology. BUT and this is a big but, it just shreds, certainly for trails here in the UK. yes i do own an older one so im going to be a bit biased but most of the trails here in the uk really dont require a full on DH rig and from my experience anyways the bikes that are designed to pedal up as well as down dont ride as well as it including its very close brother the 5 the patriot is just a mini dh bike for the average uk DH trail and it fits the bill perfectly for that. I'm definatly glad to see it back in the roster
