Etnies Signs Brandon Semenuk

by Mike Levy
Dec 1, 2011 at 16:22

Enties has a long and storied history in the skate world, starting life in France in 1986 and now sponsoring some of the most prolific athletes in the skate, moto, snow and surf genres. It looks like mountain biking can be added to that list with the addition of Trek's slope style wunderkind Brandon Semenuk to their roster. Semenuk, who took the top spot at this year's Kokanee Crankworx, 26TRIX, Claymore Challenge, Bearclaw Invitational, as well as the FMB overall title, had this to say about his new sponsor
bigquotesEtnies is an innovator in footwear and have some of the best athletes through out the world of action sports. I'm pumped on the support and to show that Etnies Footwear/Sole Technology have some of the most progressive products, even in the world of MTB! - Brandon Semenuk

The obvious question on everyone's mind is surely if Etnies will debut a soft soled MTB specific shoe on the heels of signing Semenuk. Given their huge following in the alternative sports arena it would likely be a hit, assuming that the shoe design is as sorted as their skate offerings. Signed to wear Etnies footwear only, Brandon will be rocking their Number Mid, 5 Fusion and Jameson models.

Etnies already have some amazing soles, they just need a slightly more solid feel and they're onto a winner.

etnies shoes are by far the most comfortable shoes i own, closely followed by globes, but i cant ride in etnies as they're nowhere near stiff enough, just end up with my feet really hurting after a hour or so.
If they can come up with a nice tread pattern that actually grips when walking back to the top (not all of us have uplifts or chairlifts) possibly some sticky rubber and stiffen the sole and lower half of the shoe and they'll be onto a winner.

Its true that Brandon absoluteley smoked the other guys this year ... i really like his style
because he combined so many riding styles in one ... DirtJump, Slopestyle, DH, Big Mountain ... and so on
He is really a great inspiration on the bike ...

It's funny, when I rode bmx way back when all I wore were etnies. They were the best thing I could find at the time for street riding. I loved the classic lo-cut and the original Vallely. I also owned a pair of Taj shoes that I wore in the woods for a bit. I love to see some more MTB oriented offerings.

I ride regular etnies and just even long boarding over a summer have worn thru the toe from pushing, would be awesome for them to come out with a thicker sole so the show would last longer, the rest of the shoe is great only thing that has let me down so far

It's important that if a company markets shoes for mountain biking that it be designed with riders needs at heart. Several other brands already have a good chunk of this market demographic, however they are not exactly what we want to wear out on Saturday night. We encounter mud and sand every ride, so in my mind it's important that it be able to stand up to repeated washing and maybe have a system in mind to keep sand out. I don't ride with clip shoes though many do. A stiff sole is important and maybe two stiffness grades may be an idea. If our needs can be met all while not being priced to high or being another bland looking shoe on the store shelf relying on a name to sell, then its very much a viable product option. It seems all to often that contracts are signed, monetary remuneration is exchanged and products are put on shelves that cost a mint and get professional reviews but end up just being another item preying on fashion victims. But if Etnies can do this right then they might have more than a few happy customers. I'd be willing to give them a try, try anything once.

It is difficult to make compromise between having good grip and hikeability for walking back up pushing your bike back up.
Best hiking boots i have for riding are not that good for hiking. There is a market for shoe that fills that void.
But I am up to the chalange if Etnies needs expert bike designer from Scotland you really would be suprised at results.
Positive that is, But realisticly how likely is that going to happen, But may be Brandon has some good ideas there is nothing wrong with the bikes he helped develope apart from do not have Sealed Drive transmition.
Hoping to be in Socal in january working on Sealed drive for mountain bike Design.

Too bad Etnies SUCK for riding. The grip on the soles shreds to bits on metal pedals in no time.
I had a pair last year which only lasted 2 months before having huge holes in the soles where my feet contact the pedals, and next to no grip left. Not good enough for a shoe that cost over $100.
If they can get the soles right for riding and stiff enough in a nice traditional, bulky skate shoe, I'll buy them again.
And Bring back all suede skate shoes! Shiny leather/vinyl shoes look horrible

flag DARKSTAR63 (Dec 2, 2011 at 5:47)
Yeah you have to be careful bashing skate shoes when they are used for riding. The best skate shoes have really soft rubber for board grip and flexible soles for enhanced board feel. A great bicycle shoe this does not make. I used to wear them for bmx but when you use them on mtb pedals with tall sharp pins- they dont hold up.

The etnies numbers are good for riding, they were developed for bmxing. I own a pair of them and they have a stiff and grippy sole. (I use them with plastic pedals, so I don't know what would happen on metal pedals.)

I wanna see a nice MTB specific high shoe from the etnies with a grippy stiched sole, a strap and with a nice, impact absorber insole.

Etnies Number Mid Shoes - desiged and developed for bmx with aaron ross. should do the job for most mountain bikers, except in wet weather but no should except 5-10's or Tevas are really worth bothering with in the wet.
