Da Bomb Tsar Bomba and New Thin Pedals - Eurobike 2011

Eurobike

We showed you the prototype version of the Tsar Bomba at last year's Eurobike show, but Da Bomb is now ready to go into production with their eye catching machine. The 9" travel Bomba uses a single pivot and linkage activated rear end which may look similar to other designs on the market, but the bike uses different pivot points that will result in a very different personality on the trail. The frame retails for $1899 EUR in the gold color shown, $1799 EUR for either blue or red, and ticks all of the boxes required of a proper downhill bike: ISCG-05 chain guide tabs, sealed bearing pivots all around, a tapered head tube and a 12 x 150mm aluminum rear axle as stock.

Tsar Bomba details:
• Intended use: downhill racing
• Rear wheel travel: 9"
• X-Fusion Vector RC rear shock
• Single pivot, linkage activated design
• Tapered head tube
• ISCG-05 chain guide tabs
• 64.5 DEGREE head angle
• Size: 16" only
• Available as a frame only
• Colors: metallic red, cobalt blue, gold
• MSRP: $1899 EUR (gold), $1799 EUR (red, blue)

The Tsar Bomba is built using extensively hydroformed tubes, including a top tube that slopes down drastically to improve stand over height. The frame weighs in at 11 lbs including the rear shock. That figure may be higher than some more expensive options, but the sturdy construction looks to be ready for any abuse that you can dish out.

Da Bomb has gone with a single pivot swingarm design combined with a linkage to modify the leverage rate in order to provide a supple early stroke and enough bottom out resistance to handle large hits.

Eurobike

Is this burly enough for you? The bike's massive rear end should be stout enough for even the largest and most aggressive riders. There is no accommodation for smaller rotors on the rear of the Tsar Bomba, with the rear caliper bolting directly to the bike's 8" post mounts without requiring an adapter.

At just 11mm tall, the Bare Bones pedal is among the thinnest available. In order to measure up so thin Da Bomb as moved the outermost sealed bearing outside of the CNC'd pedal body, protecting it via a metal shroud. An external nut at the end of the axle allows you to adjust the pedal's free spin, less if you are dirt jumping or more if you have them on your all-mountain bike. Holding your feet in place are eight hex head pins per side that thread in from opposite pedal face. The pins themselves are of a standard size, meaning that you can easily find replacements, longer than stock if desired, at your local supply store. Platform size measures up at 105mm x 100mm, and they weigh a competitive 343 grams for the set. Color choices include chrome, anodized black, red and latte brown.

Are we ready for another standard? There are a few companies, including Da Bomb, that are close to releasing bar and stem combinations that use a massive 35mm diameter bar clamp size. The larger diameter - the current standard is 31.8mm - is said to go a long way towards raising bar and stem rigidity, although we have yet to put any time on the new size to verify that claim. The CNC'd MK20 direct mount stem shown above fits the BoXXer mounting pattern and is adjustable in length, from 45mm to 50mm, and can be had in black, sliver and gold color options.

Da Bomb enters the telescoping seat post game with their Cannon post, a 110mm dropper that can be activated with either a lever under the seat or a well thought out trigger remote next to your grip. The 534 gram Cannon uses an air spring to raise the saddle, along with hydraulic internals that allow it to have an infinite adjustment range. Total length is 330mm, and it can be had in 31.6mm and 30.9mm sizes.

Visit the Da Bomb website to see their entire lineup.

flag bunkey (Sep 12, 2011 at 4:12)
DaBomb has no where near the quality or R&D of the big bike names; which is reflected in the pricing, the weight, the catalog tubing/dropouts and that disgustingly tacky finish.

Good bang for your buck, but definitely not to be compared with leading companies.
  • + 1
flag ridinsaila (Sep 12, 2011 at 22:01)
@bunkey i completely disagree i love my DaBomb frame and parts. i admit the frames are on the slightly heavy side but they do know what they are doing and this has made them bullet proof!
  • + 3
flag bunkey (Sep 13, 2011 at 5:42)
I'm not saying their product is bad or they don't know what they're doing, I'm saying you cannot expect boutique companies to follow pricing guidelines set by DaBomb as their bikes don't cost nearly as much to develop, build, and they sure as shit don't have the racing pedigree of the expensive manufacturers.
  • + 1
flag intlabs (Sep 14, 2011 at 7:22)
 Bunkey:
Before you start ripping catalog tubing/drop-outs I suggest you have a look at the old IH Sunday: the dropout design was quite similar...
Your spot on about the racing pedigree though, it would be nice to know how much of the RRP of most 'big' brands go on marketing etc, how much does it cost for Trek to say "We solved that" for each session 9.9 sold?
  • + 1
flag bunkey (Sep 14, 2011 at 7:57)
Here I'm not ripping on anything man, Just giving the reasons why the prices can't be compared. There's nothing wrong with catalog tubing, it just isn't as refined as a unique tubeset (in most cases) and therefore doesn't cost as much to manufacture.

I have owned several da bomb bikes and have the Bouncing Betty as a DH bike. The frames mentioned above such as the TR450 and Nuke Proof are all made in the same factory. Da Bomb is the house brand of the factory. You can pay for which ever name you like, but they quality of Da Bomb parts is exceptional. They were like Kona or Banshee a few years back with totally overbuilt designs, but they are slimming down like everyone else. I had a Da Pukka before getting my Ibis Mojo SL and the performance difference wasn't worth the multi thousand dollar difference in price. Don't get me wrong the Ibis is amazing, but the Da Pukka was sold to a friend who rides primarily lift assist parks and it rides great. After 3 years of serious use/abuse it is holding up perfectly fine.

Although the bike is very sick, the new "standard" theyre trying to push doesn't seem all that nice. I'm pretty much tired of "standards" that keep getting changed and I'm also not to keen on the tapered head tube. It's a pain paying for/finding tapered headsets.

I max out a 400mm post on my 6"x6" bike, and it is the largest frame the particular manufacturer makes in that model. Being smaller, the bike has excellent maneuverability and standover. Am I missing this new fad where people ride bikes larger bikes and have less standover?

flag swearmouth (Sep 11, 2011 at 20:44)
The 35mm bars are unique among new standards in that they actually could matter. Unlike 15mm rear axles which save essentially no weight, overdrive headsets which are just in between 2 current standards, and 142mm rear hub widths which are only marginally lighter than 150mm, this could actually provide a significant performance increase.

I know DaBomb has gotten kinda of a bad rap for being chincy and what not, but I gotta say, I really like the LOOKS of everything I'm seeing on their site as of like last year... I'd like to know if their stuff stands the test of time, but really, HOW many ways are there to make a stem, and seeing as nearly EVERYTHING for bikes are made in the same factory in Asia (to some extent - I realize there are exception, and it's just a generalization- and I'm not refering to "catalog" frames, even most "made in Canada, US or insert country here..." bikes are still assembled/made in Asia, afik, only Intense and a few others are ACTUALLY made in their ncountry of origin...) and just get different names put on them, I can't imagine it's THAT badly made eh...

SO: Anyone got any time on any of their newer offerings, Frames, Stems etc.Say the stuff they've had out for the last year or two??? Their prices are pretty dam good adn I really like the color offerings they have. I like stuff from Chromag and Straightline etc. but sometimes the price can just be a bit hard to swallow for general parts. Wheels are one thing, but I mean a stem that's 2x the average market price??? It's just a hunk of aluminum, it's not ever Ti... Or am I totaly wrong and is their stuff actually made in Canada or the US etc???
