bigquotesYou can't race downhill without thinking about being fit or just being totally fine with getting smoked, so racing there kind of opens your eyes to needing to train. - Aaron Gwin on the Fontana DH course

3 in a row and 4 for the Season for Aaron Gwin. He also won the first US gold at a world cup at home since Missy Giopve and Shaun Palmer in 99 at Big Bear. Gwinning indeed.
By winning the Windham, New York, World Cup round Gwin made it three in a row and four for the season. He also won the first US gold at a World Cup at home since Missy Giove and Shaun Palmer in '99 at Big Bear. Gwinning, indeed. He finished the season with five World Cup wins, the most by a male racer, and an incredible feat considering that he broke onto the World Cup scene a few seasons ago after riding downhill bikes for roughly eight months.

Yup it s that hip. Th eone we all say we will never shoot agian but always do. Here Aaron Gwin gets all scrubbed out for some extra speed.

You can keep up with Aaron by visiting his official website.

yea, fk... nothing against him but he could learn a bit from Tippie - a guy who speaks and thinks faster than a radio dj on speed, but still has his crazy head equipped with "pause" button and an switch to "listen-mode"

I don't know which is worst, an interviewer who talks too much or one who thinks he's really funny and can't stop laughing.

C'mon an interview run by Tippie is a experience in a class of its own, not to get some info out of it... though I'd love to see Sir Attenborough doing an interview with Danny Hart!

whoa Pinkbike haters out there. I'm a superfan of Aaron Gwin's. I was trying to relate my own experiences to him and we grew up in the same place with no downhills. I'm excited to see an American killing it at downhilling. We had a list of question but decided to freestyle it so it felt like a conversation. sorry bros

i think it's an attention span thing(or lack thereof), kirt. you're coming from a rider/fan/peer perspective...well...because you are those things. so, why would you interview like a talk show host?

To me this feels like people's initial response to having Tippie talk to riders and not understanding what Brett is about as a rider and a fan. Kirt has done so many things in our sport and continues to do so and shows his enthusiasm in ways like relating to Gwin - something that less than 1% of us can do at that level. I say great work Kirt and I hope to see more things like this with you in the future.

After reading the comments I was ready for a shite interview.. turns out it was really good. I would ask 'why all the hate' but this is PB so I guess it's to be expected. I thoughts Kirt's insights and ability to relate to Aaron as another American mtb legend made for a unique interview.

I was actually really nervous to do this interview because Im such a super fan of Gwin but I was more stressed out on the comments if I did a shitty job. He achieved something I dedicated my whole life to, and never could. Besides, after the amount of concussions I've had, I'm glad I was able to focus as long as I did. Come hang out with me if you want to hear some real blabbering. I might make you laugh.

yeah, I guess when voreis interviews someone like gwin it can be more conversational because he has achieved more than many of us ever will. Sure one of us would just ask questions but never be able to relate and share our own experiences to add to the content as voreis has here. good job kirt, not bad for someone who rides bikes professionally not interviews professionally

Voreis did a fine job interviewing him I think! He seemed pretty excited and a little nervous but who wouldn't be. Plus, Gwin isn't overly talkative at all so getting him to say as much as he did is pretty cool. Gwin's the man, seems super down to earth and just like a really chill guy. Congrats on a great season!

Just too that bad americans are so patriotic... Gwin's DNA would be the same if he would live in Zimbawe.
I wish Vories would forget about Gwin country and interview the rider as a HUMAN.

I also wish Pinkbike would not put a flag beside our username but just our GPS location.

Sorry we have pride in our country and are happy when someone from here does well. Also I'm pretty sure the fact that Gwin is from America doesn't matter in the interview, but the fact that he did so well this year does. And there are countries in the world, so you should probably get used to that...

Fk stop being so serious about stupid nationalities... you can take a pixx out of each other, it relieves tensions, but being serious is just retarded. In all of that sht here, the only victim is the Gwinny. Stop with this pride sht, and look at yourself in the mirror, read a bit of histories of your own countries again, there's not much to fkn proud about. Look at yourself and mind your own ass to be as clean as possible. If you have some deep problem with something you have no idea about, count to three and fk off!

Worlds is a race all about nations pride, it's like DHes olympics, thats why they swap out their team kit for nations colors. Sorry those of us in the USA which is arguably the biggest DH market, finally has someone that is competing on a world scale and doing well. Maybe instead of everyone on here getting so offended that as Americans we are stoked on some US wins, you can get behind you're favorite riders. And yes most of us are Gwin fans, but I guarantee all of us Americans were stoked on Hart's win or any other rippin riders victories.

Let us support our favorite riders as you do yours, chances are our lists contain some of the same names- regardless of country that we or the riders come from.

being from a country that is so hated for being ignorant or whatever doesn't mean we all are and if you think thats the case then you are ignorant and maybe we all should get mad at your country

Patriotism was invented by the government who needed people to be slaughtered in war thinking that they are doing the right thing for their country...

I'm stoked for Gwinn, but I can't understand the American pride, they are either brainwashed or just ignorant of the fact that so many countries in the world are suffering because of America and by countries I mean people...

flag WAKIdesigns (Sep 23, 2011 at 10:30)
I think if people would send more time to think about what is a difference between a country, a nation, a culture, a society, a family, understand each of these, we wouldn't have those discussions.

And to be fairly honest bitchin on America is 99% because people like to point a finger at someone. It's nice and easy to say they fk the world and live as good and eco friendly European. People can be so stupid: "the war is not an answer!" - dude you dream of a villa in Mediterranean, 3 cars, 5 bikes, holidays 3 times a year, IPad, your children and their children having access to same sort of sht. If that's the vision of happyness then the war is the ONLY answer. And US does it's best so you can have it, so stop btchn on them

There's greed in people, no matter the flag, it's just in US there were better opportunities to achieve such state of things than in Europe. "Poor Chinese bladi fakin bla producing stuff for US and EU". Oh really? Who is the biggest importer of stuff from Africa and starts doing proper slavery manufacturing there? "Oh fkn Chinese bladi fkn bla, don't they know every women in Kongo has been raped several times, people are killed in such terrible ways, human life has so low or no value there"...

Wait - who buys stuff containing all that suffering in the end? - you and me. There's a demand, then there's a supply. No, you fkn know you don't fkn have to, pretty much all you need is in proximity of 100km from you!

Why do Canadians get all giddy when Steve Smith does well? It's OK...us 'Mericans get pretty pumped about Stevie, too - even if he isn't from Nascar-land.

Seriously, it's only been 12+yrs since a rider from the USA has done anything significant in the DH world. Considering this is our sport from the beginning, you're damned-straight we're going to get a little stoked by Gwin's accomplishments. I'd be stoked about his past season despite his nationality, much like I nearly jumped thru the ceiling for Danny Hart @ worlds.

Long story short - ride more...bitch less. Smile

Awesome job Kirt and Aaron. Thanks for a wicked interview! I liked how Kirt related to both of their desert upbringing on dry slippery trails equated to hi performance mud racing, personal respect for Tomac and Monk, and how Fontana's 1 min finish sprint taught diversity in their DH training. Sure, Kirt could have condensed his questions a bit (and aimed the direction mic a bit better) but his stoke on the sport of DH racing and respect for Gwin is undeniable. I think they are both awesome symbols for the sport and were good and natural on camera. Aaron is a true professional good guy and Kirt will crack you up if you do ever get the chance to blabber with him. Legends!!!

Great interview of a modern legend by a legend himself. To the haters, do a google search on "Kirt Voreis" and you might be surprised at how talented of a rider he is...as well as how much of an ambassador to the sport that guy is. Sure, he's not a professional interviewer but he has waaaaaaaaaay more insight to not only DH, but FR, DS, 4X and I'm sure several more disciplines of the sport we all love. Yes, he was talking a lot but he was trying to set up the questions to give those new to the sport (maybe you - yes, you!) more insight to just how Gwin got to where he is right now. That being said, he aced it...period. [/rant]

BTW, awesome seeing Gwin's eyes light up when Kirt mentioned how kids all over are inspired by him. Good to see he wants to give back to them as well - how can anybody hate that (not that anybody HERE is)?

b4life - WE'RE cool. You're perfectly entitled to feel annoyed by Kirt. Had I not met him at a couple of our local races, I could see how you might find him annoying. Having met him, he's very approachable and can still ride the sh*t out of a bike - down or up the hill.

He's very in touch with the pulse of the sport, so he was able to really set up a good interview - not to mention both of their careers have some similar crossroads. Let's face it, Gwin isn't a big talker from what we've seen so far. That's not a bad thing, but I'm sure Kirt wanted to do his best at avoiding the dreaded awkward silence that can happen with the q&a format. Besides, that can be the worst kind of interview more often than not - you know the answer before the question is even finished half the time.

Kind of cool that the sport has been around long enough to where the younger generation has a lot to draw from in regards to past legends. I'm sure 15yrs from now, Gwin will be interviewing some young ripper that's dominating everything and will probably annoy those that didn't know who he was, thinking "who does that guy think he is - some legend or something?!". Any bets? Wink

Pininator, I'll tell you how it's gonna go down; Gwin will beat Hill at probably every round, by at least 5 seconds. Gwin is likely going to be even a little faster next year, more experienced, so will Hart, Brosnan, Macdonald, and the other young guys. Hill will struggle to keep up with those guys, let alone Gwin. Hill might win another world cup race or two before he retires, but no way does he dominate the technical tracks like he used to. Gwin is going faster than anyone ever, the game has been stepped up from where it was just few years ago. I'm curious to see how fast Minnar and Gee will be, if they will be able to beat Gwin on the pedal courses.

Look at Gwin's arms, those aren't mtb arms, those are moto arms. Dude is strong, and obviously a hard worker. Having the perfect background for DH racing helps too; clipped in and racing the bmx circuit as a little kid, then racing the moto circuit as a teenager. Having Tomac give you advice and help you train has also gotta help too.

flag Pininator (Sep 21, 2011 at 1:34)
I wouldn't bet against you, Protour - your scenario is the other side of the coin without a doubt.

Still, Hill's 7th @ Worlds is far from insignificant considering he wasn't in form (or fully recovered for that matter). Add names like Hart, Brosnan, Mac Donald and the regular wild-cards to the G's (Gee and Greg) and I can't help but think it will be a season like no other.

he must train pretty hard, he looks haggard for a 23 year old. No doubting his ability though

What a guy indeed. Great to see a yank back in the World Cup and winning. Us Aussies, Kiwis, Brits and Frenchies needed some competition from the USA! Given the success he's achieved this year, he could've been full of piss and wind, but Gwin seems to be a humble straight up and down all American nice guy. Nice!

Kirt is annoying. Talks about him self too much and nobody cares.
